Researchers at InGuardians have released a tool designed to help find vulnerabilities in smart meters. The tool is called OptiGuard and may be of vital assistance as the Energy Department continues to give out millions of dollars in grants for the development and implementation of Advanced Metering infrastructure. InGuardians has been working with both utility and equipment vendors since 2008 to help identify weaknesses in the new technology that could be taken advantage of by hackers. So far, they’ve identified a way to use ports on individual meters to change the way that specific meter operates.
