The Slowly Evolving Smart Grid

The utility market is difficult for a variety of reasons that range from the fact that there are a limited number of utility companies to the fact that their profits are regulated by the government. Competition and the room for organic growth are limited. The current process of the industry growing with smart grid technology and software carries its own difficulty, the utility companies’ lack of experience with software. The spread of the smart grid technology has effected a shift in the internal structure of the utilities which, in conjunction with deregulation experimentation in Texas, may lead to exciting new changes and more direct competition in the utility market.
