How ARPA-E Is Working to Create the 21st Century Smart Grid

ARPA-E is an investment from the Department of Energy of over $770 million for cutting-edge energy technologies. The majority of that money has been used on renewable energy, biofuels, energy storage, and power electronics, but there is still quite a bit of ARPA-E funding dedicated to smart grid technologies. ARPA-E started a Green Electricity Network Integration (GENI) program in October 2011 aimed at increasing the integration of renewable energy, particularly wind and solar power, into grid distribution. The GENI program then distributed $38.9 million to various companies and researchers to develop technology on both the hardware and software side of the grid in an effort to blur the line between the grid and network .
