3 Foreign Companies Invest in U.S. Project to Export Liquid Gas

Two Japanese conglomerates, Mitsui and Mitsubishi, and French energy company GDF Suez have all signed agreements with San Diego based Sempra Energy to invest up to $7 billion in a Louisiana natural gas project. All three foreign companies agreed to take a 16.6 percent stake in a plant which will export liquefied natural gas from the United States. GDF Suez, whose final decision still depends on the project successfully getting the proper permits, believes the plant will begin operations by 2017. Although the United States has only recently made the shift from being a gas importer to being a major producer of natural gas, government restrictions still prohibit exports except to specific countries.
