How Important is Substation Automation to the Smart Grid?

As the energy grid is modernized at an increasing rate, substations and the automated equipment within them will play an increasingly important role. A recent report from Pike Research shows that more than 10,000 substations will be automated globally by the end of the year, which includes both new substations and updated older substations. By 2020, the number of substations automated on an annual basis should surpass 20,000.  The substation is an important part of the growing smart grid because the substation network transforms voltage as needed for safe transportation and delivers and provides a junction point to split power flow into as many paths as are required by the grid.
