Texas Smart Meter Hearing Draws Impassioned Testimony

About 5.7 million smart electric meters have been installed throughout Texas since the Public Utility Commission that oversees the state’s power market put forth a requirement for smart meters in response to directions from the state legislature. This has sparked passionate and occasionally emotional testimonies about the smart meters to the Texas Senate committee from concerned citizens. The Senate committee has been set up to investigate possible health effects, but citizens who oppose the meters are concerned about their privacy being invaded and the mandatory nature of the installations as well. One citizen complained that a smart meter had been installed on her property despite her denying the local utility company access to the property.
