How Natural Gas Kept Some Spots Bright and Warm as Sandy Blasted New York City

William Hooke, a senior policy fellow at the American Meteorological Society, suggested in a blog on the NY Times website that officials, business owners, and residents of affected areas would all do well to look into the areas in which the power did not fail during the super storm. Looking at New York City and investigating the areas which maintained power, reveals a natural gas grid that parallels the normal electricity grid and which allows businesses to produce electricity for themselves with very efficient generators located on premises. The natural gas grid helped to keep both New York University and the Co-op City housing complex lit up during the storm.
