Coal Stocks Plunge After Obama Victory

With an expectation for coal companies to have a rough time under the second term of Obama’s presidency, coal stock dropped at the election. Coal consumption has already dropped due to the increasing use of domestic natural gas which has made it a cheaper fuel than coal. The Obama administration’s proposed environmental regulations can make things even harder on the coal companies, restricting mercury, sulfur dioxide, and other coal emissions. Mitt Romney had proposed the opposite, suggesting a lightening of the emissions restrictions that limited coal use and coal stocks rose when he won the first presidential debate earlier in the year.
