Gas Boom County Strives for Economic Afterglow

Pennsylvania’s Lycoming County and its main city, Williamsport, are working to change the economic problem of drilling that is criticized as “boom and bust,” where companies come into an area, take what they need, and then leave with little impact on the economy of the region hosting them. Lycoming County is working to position itself as both a source of local workers by training 7000 students in two- and four-year industry-specific degrees, and as a long-term beneficiary of both the local and national expansion of gas drilling. Williamsport’s Mayor, Gabe Campana, is quoted as saying, “We’re wrapping our arms around the industry.”
