A coalition of scientists called the Union of Concerned Scientists has recently released a report stating that there are up to 353 coal-fired electricity plants in the United States that ought to be retired due to their old age and inability to compete with newer alternatives to generating electricity. The 353 plants targeted in the report provide 59 gigawatts of power among them, which is a little more than 6% of the total electricity used by the United States, and are well past their 30 year lifespan. They also create the bulk of the nation’s pollutants and greenhouse gases.
