Changing the electric grid from the previous analog system to the new “smart” digital system involves massive amounts of data. To put it into perspective, until 2003 the total amount of data generated by the entire world was about five exabytes, which is about 1.25 billion DVDs worth of data. Today, the same amount of data is generated across the world on a daily basis. With such a massive increase in data generation across the board, many companies, including utilities, must adapt their intelligence to include the ability to analyze huge amounts data through data analytics. This is the challenge the smart grid provides.
