Cisco Develops New Switches for Harsh Environments

As part of the “Internet of Everything” initiative, Cisco is exploring areas outside of traditional business IT networking.  Having gained experience over the last few years working with utilities in North America and Europe, Cisco is now developing specialized low-latency switches intended to be used in electric-power distribution systems.  This new equipment will be used not only at the substation tier, but also the system-control level where substations are connected to each other.  This is accomplished by adapting its network switching and security platforms to suit specialized utility needs.  The new switch will be compatible with utility sensors that have serial interfaces as opposed to Ethernet ones.
